What is Android SDK? What does it do?

I just got a Droid 2 Global and i have been looking around online. Iread online about an update online called gingerbread it says its for developers and stuff also it says i should download SDK on my computer. What is SDK? What do you do with it?|||SDK stands for Software Development Kit. Those are the tools developers use to write and publish custom applications for the device.
