How to install Android apps directly to the SD card?

I have an HTC Wildfire S running Android 2.3.3 (I believe it's called Gingerbread). How can I install apps directly to the SD card. I've tried the Android SDK and command prompt routine many times, but it's just not working for me. My phone is not rooted but I will root it if necessary because I'm tired of being bugged with the message "Storage low, please manage your applications." Can someone point my in the right direction? Thanks|||not all apps can be stored on the sd card on the wildfire s. there is a free app in android market called apps2sd that you can download and will move whatever can be moved to the sd card.
