Getting started programing in Windows?

I want to start learning to develop in Windows (I'm coming from Java) and I do not know what software to download. I'm a student so I'm getting the software free from https://www.dreamspark.com/ (very nice of microsoft to do that). However there is a very long list of software and I don't know what I need. there are different categories as well. I decided that I don't need any of the server software, or the virtualPC (my computers kinda low-end) I am downloading Expression Studio right now but I'm not sure if I need it since I have photoshop. There are many applications under development tools and I'm not sure what I need and what I don't

Here is a list:

VisualStudio2010 profetional

SmallBasic

Kodu Game Lab

VisualStudio2010 Express

VisualStudio2008 Profetional

XNA Game Studio

Robotics Developer Studio 2008 RC3

Windows MultiPoint Mouse SDK

Windows Embedded Standard 7

Windows Embedded CE 6.0

Visual Basic 2008

Visual C# 2008

Visual C++ 2008

Visual Web Developer 2008

--------------------------------------鈥?br>

what I'm pretty sure I don't need:

Windows Phone (I'm on Android)

Visual Studios ( I only need 1 of them. I might go with express, is professional that much better?)

XNA Game Studio (I won't be doing Xbox or Zune Development)

Robotics Developer Studio (If only I had a Use for this!)

MultiPoint Mouse (Seems kinda cool though)

Windows Embeded

Visual Web Developer (I have DreamWeaver)

Also: I'm kinda confused about the visual basic/C#/C++. I guess I should get all 3 but which language should I focus on?|||Visual Studio Express should be enough for a beginner. If you are a student, you can also get Visual Studio Professional for free. Of course, Professional has more features, but again, you don't need them yet.

Visual Basic, C++, C# are different programming languages.

I would suggest to learn to C++/C#. After a year or two you will see that it is a better choice.|||For 3D programs I suggest using Alice 2.0 ( http://www.alice.org/index.php?page=down鈥?/a> )

For just regular applications Visual Basic 2010 would be best ( http://www.microsoft.com/express/Downloa鈥?/a> (Look through the list for Visual Basic. C++ and C# are more advanced.))|||Whoa! You don't need even a fraction of that stuff to get started writing Windows applications.

All you need is Microsoft's own free Visual Studio 2010 Express development environment, which you can download from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/express/Downloa鈥?/a>

The Pro version is hundreds of dollars and doesn't really add anything that you need, unless you get into MFC (which I don't necessarily recommend) or other Microsoft-specific proprietary stuff.

You might also find a resource editor handy鈥攇oogle for ResEdit, which is also free. It's not absolutely necessary. (The Pro version of Visual Studio comes with a resource editor, but it's hard to justify $700 just for that.)

C++ and C are the standard development languages for Windows. C# is a worthless Microsoft invention, and Visual Basic is very easy to get started with but produces slower and more awkward code than a compiled language like C/C++. Since you can get all of these for free with the Visual Studio Express software, you may as well install them all, just in case you want some variety.

I have some questions about Microsoft Silverlight?

What is Silverlight all about? I perceive it as being Microsoft's offering to replace Adobe Flash?

How do you author a Silverlight applet? Is there a designer called "Silverlight" or do you just use C#, WPF, or ...?

Do you have to have IIS in order to serve Silverlight applets? For example, if I create a Flash (SWF) object, I can host that on whatever server I want -- as long as the client's browser has the Flash Plug-in installed, they will be able to run it. I don't want to have requirements that force me to use IIS or run mono on Linux.

Am I correct in my understanding that users of Windows, Mac and Linux can all view Silverlight content in their browsers (e.g. are there plug-ins or whatever available for all those platforms?) What about other devices like Android, iPad, etc?

Apple recently cried about "how terrible Adobe Flash is" on the Mac. Is the Silverlight plugin any better? If not, maybe its Apple's SDK that is the problem?|||Microsoft started out being an OS that would run an amazing variety of hardware configurations. That vision has been abandoned in favor of the race to make "wall gardens".

Consider Apple. You use their product with their software to visit their store to buy their music format - a walled garden. Microsoft thinks they can muscle in with the same store layout using alternate patents.

In the 1990s, computer-illiterate bureaucrats granted too many patents for the most general of ideas. That legal battle has begun and should be crystallized as to what technology is truly a technology.

I see Microsoft being squeezed out of the handsets / handheld market. Silverlight is only partially implemented on other browsers. For instance, .svg is a good idea about defining graphics using .xml, and advocated by the w3.org.

Microsoft choses not to comply.

Google will answer your other technical questions about Silverlight. Adobe has saturated the market for their products. Adobe, as boxed software, has no assets that any other technical company would want. Adobe made the Mac and LaserPrint work for Apple, and then Apple promptly drove away. Jobs is such a hounddog about Adobe is the reason about Flash plug-in.

If you have superuser, you should be rooted.

You need to update "BusyBox", there should be an option to do this through the Titanium Backup interface. This should resolve your issue.

Visual Studio 2008 problem. When developing in C#, .NET 3.5 Compact Framework, the toolbox is grayed out!?

That is I select to show all. If not, the toolbox is just empty!

I am through with this ****! If I can't solve it by tomorrow with or without your help, I am selling all my WinMO phones and switching to Android!|||Hello!

I am running Visual C# Express Edition and I haven't had that toolbar problem. I suggest rebooting your computer and try running VS in administrator mode or maybe changing the compatibility mode.

Hope it helps!

P.S. I am not a huge fan of my WinMo 5 phone :P.|||Just to be certain, what project template did you select when you created the project?

Who makes the best developer tools for mobile application development?

Who do you think makes the best development tools for smartphones or overall software development? I have always felt that Microsoft provides the best designers, debuggers, and source editors with Visual Studio. I have written Windows Phone applications, Android applications, but I have never used Xcode to write applications for the iPhone. I would like to know what your experience has been with the three platforms I mentioned or others like: RIM's Blackberry SDK, PalmOS, or Nokia's Symbian.

With my experience, I think Microsoft's Visual Studio is the best. I think they provide an extremely awesome IDE and rich development framework. I think I get the fastest time to market with Visual Studio. Their intellisense has always been top-notch except for the lack fo C++/CLI support in 2010. The Expression Blend UI Designer is very easy to use which complements MVC architecture. The .NET Framework and Silverlight Tools for Windows Phone is very rich. I never find myself re-inventing the wheel like I do on other platforms.

I think the Adroid Development Tools for Eclipse are pretty well done, but could be improved. I think the UI designer is sub-par and tend to write the XML layouts by hand instead. I think the debugger is alright, but no where near as good as VS. A simple typo while writing your XML layouts causes the Activity to crash with virtually no feedback. I think SQLite databases are fairly easy to integrate; however, I still think MS SQL Server CE is better.

What is your favorite? I have no experience with Xcode and the iOS SDK, so I am interested in why you might like that.|||the best way which i suggest you for the mobile application development tool you can try socialjitney

it way for the development|||Why pay for a Microsoft license? Visual Studio is nothing but silly. If rapid software development is a criteria you should try Linux to stay current and reach behind the GUI to make changes.

Eclipse and NetBeans are java-based and the tool of choice for Android. If you want to write Apple iPhone, put your money down at the Apple Store.

From your post, stick with Microsoft. The shift in corporate mission is Brad Smith -- Veep of Legal Counsel -- is pushing aside Ballmar and wants the legal system to delegate ownership of overlapping patents. In the next five years the software picture will be a lot different. It wouldn't surprise me if the Chinese buy Microsoft for chump change and then bribe our legal system to regain dominance.

Why is there no practical visual Mobile development software?

I have looked into several different mobile SDK's for development of Palm, Android, and Windows mobile devices. Maybe I'm missing a user interface but so far all I can seem to find is data entry rather than graphical user interface. In intermediate school I had courses on web development. What we were taught , this is around 98, is not what I'm seeing. What I believe would be here I do not see. How we were taught was there would be graphical input such as a more dynamic paint, maybe closer to Adobe flash. As we made simple connections the coding would appear on the right and we would be able to enter the coding in advanced mode edits small details.

I could more than likely develop better software using a more advance paint format. Editing, shapes and inserting transitions like one does in powerpoint. As I believe it would graphics could be altered such as shape, size, color by a graphical interface. I am seeing this is in some context. Though I believe the problem is the current development software expects the developer to insert to much of the phone functions. Basic functions of the phones applications need to run on its own with custom editing only from page to page and button to button. Having to connect each service makes it overwhelming for the simplest application. It makes no grounds for starting. Like a webpage I do not expect to have to code the function of a hyper link and now that is 2010 I don't believe I should have to code too much of anything. Rather place what I want on the board, place it in order, connect each page, button and design function through already developed tools.

I know this kind of developer software exist, if anyone know or has any suggestions please let me know.|||As you say most development tools for phones have tended to be aimed at the technical user with little support for user interface experts.

The game has changed though. Windows Mobile 7 applications are based on Silverlight. This is based on XAML, which is like HTML would be if it was designed today. Moreover as well as supporting an excellent technical environment, Visual Studio, XAML can be crafted in a tool aimed at user interface experts, Expression Blend.

Silverlight supports an clean architecture where user interface code can be created in Blend and the code behind in Visual Studio. Moreover the user interface can be exercised completely within Blend, and the user interface language is powerful enough that you could recreate many of the novelty iPhone apps without having to write any programming language code.|||Phones are not standardized nearly enough for a development environment like you describe. Also, phones have limited space, memory, and resources, and large blocks of pre-built code are not efficient. That approach is fine on a desktop PC, but would create very clunky apps in a phone environment.|||You'll be able to use Visual Studio with Windows Phone 7, but as another answer said, phones are no where near "Standard", a Java app would be the closest thing to standard as you can get. But not all phones have Java VM.|||The kind of interface you want is completely unusable for anything other than the most basic (and most boring) of applications.

Real world development -- solving real problems and building complex solutions -- is much more complex than wiring up pre-built modules together like Legos.

This is not to say there's not a lot of code reuse and libraries out there. There are. More than can be counted really, but to reuse these modules in any meaningful way means getting your hands dirty.

Compatible phones regarding apps?

if i made an app, how many of the major 3g phones could i put it onto.

the iphone obviously uses the sdk format but are the symbian, blackberry, google android, java, and others compatible with this format and would it take different app development to put the same app in all of these markets?

pleaser answer in as much detail as possible, thankyou|||Are you even remotely familiar with what it means to write an application? What does "the iphone obviously uses the sdk format" mean in your mind?

SDK is an acronym, it stands for Software Development Kit, which means a software package, consisting of APIs, toos and documentations, basically all that you need in order to develop an application for a given platform, in whichever format that platfrom supports. Yes, there is a iPhone OS (iOS) SDK (in fact several released over time for each iPhone version) and there is one for each version of Blackbery, Android, and Symbian native. In fact there are several for Symbian as well, as on Symbian, being a fully featured OS, you can develop apps with C++, Java, Flash, Python, Qt, Web Run-Time ..., each of them having a [mini] SDK.

So, consider taking some programming classes, since you clearly are clueless about what programming means. Then, depending on which technology you think that you will be able to market, start downloading a suitable SDK and get on with it. If you can.

Game Programming project .. help!!?

Hi... Hello..

I need to know which is a good sdk for building android or an ios game.. i first thought of doing an ios game. but since i need a mac to run xcode.. i went for corona...i made a simple little game using a little bit of physics.. i dont have an artist.. so i took images from the internet and used them for my game.. and it came out really well.. but it took me only a week to do.. i am in my final project semester..so i need to do one single game project which would take me 4 months(full time) to complete..the problem with corona is it is too easy to build a 2d game in it,.. i need to do a bigger project that would take me atleast 4 months to learn and program..i am not so confident on moving with corona because i think its scope is limited..or am i wrong..? please correct me.. i REALLY need to do a good game project that would help me get into the industry after my graduation.. would they value something that is so simple as doing in corona..? also i am good in c and c++ which i heard as the industry standard .. should i leave mobile programming and move on trying to build a more complex game using game libraries.. allegro, directx or opengl.. how complex is it..what are game engines like unreal, unity i came across.. how can i use them in my game.. Please those who have prior experience in game programming advice me.. Thank you for your time.|||Pick-up a world-level challenge: write a chess program that will crush Deep Blue.

Mobile iOS environments (emulators)?

Or an emulator if you will. Do there exist any that would allow you to run iOS specific applications, similar to the iOS sdk, on the android mobile platform? Also, is one available for windows or linux? My understanding was that they are only available for mac users. I don't mind paying some money for these tools if they do exist, so don't hold back. Thanks!|||You can try Eclipse which has a built in emulator and is made by Oracle. You will also need to download the SDK from Google as well.

Hopes this helps!

Ok now with the Palm Pre for Sprint, what is the best phone G1 (T-Mobile), Storm (Verizon) or iPhone (AT&T)?

CES 2009 brought us a new player in the smartphone upper-echelon. Let's drill down and see how the Palm Pre compares with the iPhone and Android's G1.

1. Multitouch touchscreen/gesture control: All three are capacitive, only the Pre and iPhone have multitouch. The Pre's glowy little "gesture area" has dropped the touchable real estate all the way down tto the bottom of the phone, which is great for being able to navigate with one hand and not interfere with the screen at all. The wavey dock you bring up from the bottom looks awesome, but can you use it out of the box without a second thought or page through the manual? That's my question. Advantage: iPhone/Pre tossup.

2. Multitasking: One of the beefiest of our beefs with the iPhone SDK is its insistence on Apps running one at a time. The G1's notifications drawer was definitely a step in the right direction, but the Pre's interface is the first smartphone OS that was built with multitasking as a core design element. Resembling the Xbox's old Blades, or a less-jarring OS X Expose even, the Pre's "Cards" interface always places you in the context of every app running for fast switching, and notifications from other apps don't pull you away completely from the task at hand. Multitasking is hugely important on a phone, and it's a good sign that Palm recognizes. Advantage: Pre

3. Hardware: Adrian says:

While the hardware is definitely high quality, I'm not entirely blown away by the design. It looks really nice, and original, but it's a little too cutesy in shape and kind of reminds me of an oversized pebble. A slightly larger screen could have definitely been put to good use, and I really don't like the black space on the sides of the screen.

A phone with a built-in QWERTY still hasn't touched the iPhone in terms of sleekness and pure sex. And it might still be a while. Advantage: iPhone

4. Development platform: The Pre's "Web OS" sure sounds nice鈥攁ll developers need to know is JavaScript, HTML and CSS? Sounds good in theory, but building a mobile app will never be as easy as cranking out a new theme for your Tumblr. Palm's stressing ease of development, though, so it will be interesting to see how it stacks up against Apple's solid, familiar-to-devs OS X-based SDK and Android's fully open source approach. Advantage: Pre? If it's straight-up JavaScript, that's a lot of programmers ready to go. Note: we had iPhone here before, but we've switched with a qualification. Developer community still goes to iPhone for volume.

5. Web Integration: The Pre subtly integrates the internet into the phone at every opportunity, and it's awesome. Contacts get pulled in from Facebook, Gmail, IM and and scanned for dupes; the messaging app shows your last several emails, IMs and SMS with that contact in a single window. Really, really smart stuff. Advantage: Pre

6. App Store/developer community: A smartphone is only as good as the software it runs. On the Pre, Palm is still keeping application delivery details like pricing behind the curtain, but they did say the app delivery will be entirely handled by the phone (without a desktop app), which is a shame. They're saying that they're not going to duplicate Apple's Hobbesian app approval black box mistake, which Android has also hasn't fallen for, but there will be an approval process based on "security and stability." But as we know with Android, a dev community needs enough devices in the hands of consumers to reach critical mass, which the Pre will have to match. Advantage: iPhone, even with the black box, but Android and Pre's more open stances are reassuring.

7. Wireless charger: We've seen wireless charger tech for years at CES, but it's taken this long for a major consumer gadget to come bundled with its own wireless charger in the box. Whoops, it's not in the box, sold separately for unknown $$. But still: Bravo. Advantage: Pre

8. The Network: Dan Hesse, Sprint's CEO, gave our coast-to-coast 3G test a shout out in his press conference. Of course he did: Sprint won (in download speeds). Sprint was the only major carrier without a powerful, hype-catching smartphone choice, and now they have one. The Pre is a data-centric phone with a network we've proven to be strong in a large swatch of the country鈥攖hat's a good combo. But would you switch to Sprint for the Pre? Ugh. Advantage: Not cut and dry for everyone, but we stand by our numbers: Sprint is the best 3G network in our tests.

9. Physical keyboard: It's preference, but one held by a large swathe of the gadget buying public: physical QWERTY keypads are still the mainstream input of choice. Touch is getting better all the time, but a lot of people still want physical keyboards. But better yet is the ability to choose; unfortunately, the Pre doesn't have a soft onscreen keyboard, and its slide-out is the same meh QWERTY from the Treo Pro. Advantage: It's preference, but on me, the iPhone's soft keyboard can't be beat.

10. Camera: The P|||Palm Pre has the new Palm OS, from the videos and review I have seen, it's better than all the phones listed, but google is coming out with G2. it's a never ending war.|||iphoneeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!

dude try it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!|||I love iPhone and I have two of them iPhone and iPhone 3G. I dont use camera in any cell phone coz cell phone cant give SLR and MP is not the only thing that matters in deciding the quality of a camera. My SLR has 8 MP many point n shoot has 9.

I got my 1st iphone in July 2007 and the battery back up is still amazing.

iPhone has app that can instantly play any formats of video. You dont need to convert app will convert in seconds you wont even realize.

You can create keynot presentation right on iPhone and connect it to Projector, deliver your presentation.

On iPhone, not one there are at

least 500 apps that lets you log in to every damn socializing website and all pull contacts. I have ShoZu,Facebook,Yahoo! One Connect, FRING, AIM.

And who can even imagine the photo editing apps of iPhone even professional get mesmerized to see those apps on a phone.

You can upload photo to any website while chatting.

You can now send attachment with email. You can send audio, vido any file as attachment to anybody.

You can also download any attachment on your device. You can even download unlimited music for free right from iPhone.

Nothing can beat iPhone App store now it has 11,000 wonderful apps. It has a complete office now.

I am excited but not for Sprint I am excited coz Apple will bring another iPhone in 2009 and I will buy that without reading any review whatsoever.

ya it wont click..it will flop just on look itself ..|||OMG, Plam Pre is so ugly how can one even think of comparing it to iPhone. iPhone looks like a gadget that a professional can have.

Learn how to develop for Android?

Okay, so I've had an HTC Droid Eris for over a year now and have always been interested in the apps. How they were created, how they utilize phone features and how the apps work over a variety of different phones(ex: same app works on an Eris and a DROID X).

I'm a business major at my local college and have always had an interest in technology. When I was 12 i taught myself how to code HTML(pretty basic ha). Then I became a teenager. Focused on all the fun stuff, money, cars, girls. Anyways, I'm going to school to be an entrepreneur and I think this would be a good way to start my own source of income and get back into the technological swing of things. I downloaded the SDK and Eclipse and installed everything I apparently need to develop these bad boys. Now all I need to do is learn what the freak I'm doing. Ive watched a couple youtube tutorials but I feel that won't be enough to build something that will really be useful. So I want to either find an online class, or book, or something that can give me the basics, all the way to the most advanced parts of developing. No disrespect, but the "don't waste your time" comments will not be any helpful. So, any advice, links, etc. would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.|||Try http://developer.android.com/guide/index鈥?/a>

Good Luck!

Is Java worth learning?

Hello guys,

I am learning Java %26amp; I have heard that very few desktop applications are written in Java.

Why is that so?

I am continuing to learn Java as the syntax is used for many other SDKs e.g. iPhone SDK, Android etc.

Is it really worth learning?

Or should I directly go for Java web development where it is used more?|||Man...SDK is the essence of JSPs and JSF ( web development in Java in general ) !! you have to know SDK in order to know the Java Web API ( Servlets, JSP, JSF..etc ), though there are some topics that are directly meant to desktop development in Java ( SWING , AWT , THREADS , Java I/O ) which will not be needed for the web development ( but its a good idea to learn them because in practical life you might need to use them in few rare cases )...anyway I really would recommend a book called ( thinking in Java ) by a guy called Bruce something...hope you all the best|||ur welcome :)

|||Yeah, its worth learning if you ever plan to do applications for the different phones, or want your program to run on any operating system.

The reason you dont see too many applications written in java, to run on desktops is because java is not a compiled language so the apps run very SLOW, and consume tons of memory. You can write a much more efficient app in C++. Given the choice, I would never do an app in java, but sometimes you have no choice , like with the phones.|||The argument that few desktop applications are written in Java isn't true. Most of the products that are targeted to multiple platforms like Windows and Mac have codes written in Java. Eg: Adobe's Creative Suites require java, Well the run-time comes along with the product itself. So one won't notice it much.

Google uses java. Java is worth learning if you are really interested in. And it definitely isn't a waste.

But I don't give much care to java since I don't like that much.|||Well yeah, I know Java, C and C++, I know alot.

I think Java is just a good starting language to start out with, you can make some useful things with it, but not alot.

Also games can be written in Java. I would say learn Java first before your learn C or C++|||C# = Java (more or less).

By learning the basics of one language, you can apply that to other languages.|||yes of course

Easy rooting for nexus one?

hey well first off i have an unlocked Nexus One for AT%26amp;T and i love it but i would also like some of the features that rooting does. now i paid almost $600 for this phone (including accessories) and i dont want to brick or mess up this phone. any word on a one click rooting? maybe one of you guys can explain this to me. i consider myself as a rookie with this type of computing stuff. i also dont get how to put the android sdk into the C directory of my computer. any help please? i really really dont want to mess up my phone. im using a macbook pro running the latest version of Mac OS if thats any help|||If you're using a Mac, get the Mac version of the SDK. The C drive stuff won't matter, because Macs don't use windows drive mappings.

There is no one-click rooting. The Nexus has a locked bootloader that has to be unlocked first. Once you do that, you can install the recovery and system mod ROMs on the phone and experience the additional features and speed.

The only ROMs I've ever used are the Cyanogen ROMs. I unlocked my bootloader and had the ROMs loaded and the system running in a few minutes.

The instructions for doing everything are here:

I am in 8th grade going into high school as a freshmen.Would this be good enough?|||Hi,

If this is true what your answering.. It's PERFECT!

What kind of computer programing language should I start with?

Ok, so im very interested in learning a new language ( c, c++ obj.c java etc.) I would like to construct a app for a phone ( prob. android even though i prefer IPHONE, because I don't own a mac and dev license cost way more, plus I already have android sdk on my laptop )

Anyways I have no real experience what so ever expect for playing around with batch files witch wasn't hard, but prob. is nothing compared to what im trying to do

I will be doing this in my spare time just for fun ( considering being a software developer)

So my question is what is a good language to start on that isn't to hard ( don't mind a little challenge) that could be of benefit ?

i've looked around and seen the different ones but don't know the best one to start out on ?|||I'd recommend learning Java first. It's easiest, as far as I know. However, C++ is a little more universal.|||Start visual basic then when you ready then learn java or c++

c++ is hard tho start small

java is too hard for a beginners start with visual bsic then java or c#|||visual basic net it is more featured to what you want to do now .

C++ is a good language to begin with seince you havent anything to disorient you such as basic syntax

C++ would be harder then visual basic net for fast results.

but better to learn for long term goals

Java is also geared tword what you would like to do as well is extensive in web site development|||Android apps are written in Java, so learn Java first if that is what you want to do:

How to configure lg optimus m to install app to sd card by default?

I am having trouble configuring my metropcs lg optimus m to install apps to sd by default. I have downloaded the android sdk and avd manager and also tried various forums where they advised that I can change the default by using command prompt. ie:

http://androinica.com/2010/08/03/how-to-install-apps-to-the-sd-card-by-default-on-android-2-2-froyo/

I tried what they said in the above link and it didnt work. I cant seem to get to the adb devices part. It cant be found. Does someone know if another way that I can configure my lg optimus M to install apps to sd card by default? I am tired of moving apps to sd cos some apps dont move cos that part is grayed out.|||I am sure there is a way to do it through cli, but not sure it is a very good idea. The reason "move to sd card" is greyed out is that many apps will not work correctly or at all from the "Home" sdcard directory. Many apps need permissions to access system processes and resources that are not available from the sd card, so moving them there would be pointless. If moving an app to a new home on the sd card is met with resistance, there is probably a very good reason.

%26gt;%26gt;Try to keep the number of RUNNING apps and processes to a minimum so more resources will be available to you and the system. Periodically clear cache and data. Be merciless with task manager!

%26gt;%26gt;Control impulse downloads. Do you really need an Internet Coke Machine or talking wombat??

%26gt;%26gt;Research utilities-many of them can be achieved using apps already downloaded, or native.

When you get tired of that wallpaper or vanity app or game, UNINSTALL IT!! It is amazing how much drek people leave on their devices, much of it running constantly.

But if you can get your computer to understand your android as a device, then download Proxoid. Very nice program. May take a little bit of confusing time to get the program melded into your computer, but its a good program. Plus it becomes easy to turn on and off when you want to use your 3G. It has saved me many times when my damn internet would drop.

Websites that explain java and xml code not just tell you what to type?

i am familiar with html, and used a really good website called html dog to teach myself. I am now looking for something similar for java and xml. I just want something that outlines all the basic stuff; for example with html everything has to be contained in %26lt; and %26gt;; you need to close things with %26lt;/; %26lt;h1%26gt; %26lt;h2%26gt; %26lt;h3%26gt; are for headings, %26lt;li%26gt; is for lists etc etc etc

I want something that tells me this info for java and xml, at the moment im just copying text/code and I dont know what its for or what it means.

I've downloaded the android sdk and eclipse but tbh they make as much sense to me as bio chemistry. I have a good idea of how to navigate through eclipse, the edit and view panels etc, and i can run the code ive typed and see it in the console; but as far as all the other buttons etc go im stumped; but I'm not too worried about this for the moment.

Has anyone else used this sdk, do I need to learn code? Am i doing this right??|||I would check out the java tutorial right on their main website, or look through the Java Core book. I'm in a Java class right now %26amp; basically my teacher just posts links to the java tut online and says "write a program that does this." It will teach you the basics of how a program runs and how to use certain features, but you will ofc have to play around with it a bit. I suggest using DrJava to run your code in so you don't have to figure out the cmd line way, which is kind of confusing to use if you're not used to it. It also highlights wrong syntax %26amp; indents for you %26amp; you can easily look up error codes if you don't know what they mean. Eclipse is for pros, not noobs. :)

Ubuntu configure: command not found?

Hello

I don't understand why I cannot use the command configure..

I did sudo apt-get install build-essential and I saw build-essential is already the newest version.

I did sudo aptitude update and sudo aptitude install openssh-client openssh-server

Now I try

cd ./Downloads (where I downloaded my android-sdk-linux_x86 package)

ls

cd ./android-sdk-linux_x86

configure

And the result: configure: command not found ??

I cannot install it by synaptic..

can someone help me ? I know I will try also with Ubuntu Forum..

Thanks|||In most distros, the current folder is not in your path. This is done by design in case there is a script called ls or something similar which does something unexpected.

You need to explicitly specify a path to run a command anywhere other than /bin, /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin, so use

./configure

to run the configure script after cd'ing to its folder.

AT&T: Aria, Nexus One, 3G S, or iPhone 4?

I am looking to buy a new smartphone in a few weeks after tragically losing my 3G S last semester after leaving a bar. I have used an iPhone for the past 2 years (original and 3G S) and both were jailbroken. It's safe to say the iOS will be jailbroken or the Android will be rooted and would like the answers from that perspective. I didn't like how restrictive the iOS was despite being jailbroken but there are a few apps (iStudez Pro for example) that I almost relied on and the OS clean and simple. I don't have much knowledge on the Android platform beyond playing with the Aria in the store for a bit and running the Android SDK on my MacBook. I also don't have the slightest idea what apps are offered in their Market. I have broken down my choices to Aria vs. iPhone 3 G S and Nexus One vs. iPhone 4 based on performance (clearly the iPhone 4 is more powerful than the Aria and the Nexus One betters the 3G S). My dilemmas are with the apps, value (price and performance), and the Android OS since I don't know much about it. I could care less about Facetime or that VGA front camera on the iPhone 4 and I have used iOS 4 on my gf's jailbroken iPod Touch 2G with multitask enabled. Which phone would you pick and why? Thanks for reading this long post! Experienced users are preferred although I could use any insight and please no fanboy flamming.|||Personally, I would choose an Android phone any day because on the iPhone:

-cant take out the battery

-no removable memory

-only Apple-approved apps

-STILL no true multi-tasking like Android

-cant customize your phone AT ALL

-no Flash support

-no widgets

-no ringback tones

-all file syncing MUST be done through iTunes (pictures, etc.)

-Android phones have more memory storage

-most Android phones have better cameras

-most Android phones have faster processors

-no standard USB cable like all other phones

-instant Android OTA software updates- don鈥檛 have to wait a year like iPhone

-can鈥檛 get service in an ATT store- have to find an Apple store

-lots of features of the new iPhone only work on WiFi

Android is miles ahead of Apple- with the new 4.0 software, Apple is only now letting people do things like add folders to their home screen, because God forbid that anyone should be able to do that on their cell phone!! And even in 4 years, they haven鈥檛 been able to give the iPhone true multi-tasking capabilities, like Android.聽 Oh, btw, Android has been able to do both of those things ever since it came out.聽 By the time Apple puts out a new iPhone, there鈥檚 a better Android phone out 4 months later.聽 Bottom line: they will always be trailing Android.聽

Android is already selling more phones than Apple, and it鈥檚 been out half the time that the iPhone has.聽 By the end of the year, the Market will have 100,000 apps, which is more than the Apple Store had at its 2-year mark.聽 Android鈥檚 open-source nature will always be more appealing to devs and phone manufacturers because they can market to every carrier, and dozens of phones, instead of 1 carrier and 1 phone.聽 The possibilities are literally endless as far as Android is concerned, because ANYONE can make an app to do ANYTHING on the phone.聽 With Apple, they have to approve every single app that goes into the Store.聽 They even rejected an app because it said the聽 word Android in it- how far do you really think they鈥檙e gonna go with that kind of closed-minded thinking??聽 I want to decide what goes on my phone, not the other way around..|||Nexus One of course, it is the first phone to get Android update as always, if there is Nexus Two with better hardware, you can consider it as well|||i Didnt read your post cause its way to long but i would do i phone 4 i have had one for a while but even though it doesnt hold its charge it has really come through for me|||Hi. Why does Eclipse (Java software development kit) keep crashing?

Okay, I recently decided to look into software design for the Android OS, and after extensively following all of the setup instructions on http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.h鈥?/a> concerning installing the Java Runtime Environment (I have experience with Java, I just had it installed on a different machine), the Android SDK, Eclipse, and the ADT Plugin for Eclipse I am finding everything to work properly except for Eclipse being unstable. I have only created Android Projects since this install, but here is my problem; when I open an item (.Java, .xml, whatever) from the Package Eplorer panel on Eclipse it works fine, but then when I go to open a second item (whether it's the same item again or something different, whether I close the first window or leave it open) Eclipse ALWAYS stops responding and NEVER starts working again.

Please note; everything else works properly. I have compiled tutorial projects and run them beautifully through an Android Virtual Device, I've just experienced many crashes as I work (always in the exact way I just described).

Originally I thought that perhaps my version of Eclipse was too recent (I was using 3.6 Helios as opposed to 3.4 Ganymede or 3.5 Galileo (the two version my setup guide said were supported), but upon downloading and installing 3.5.2 Galileo (Classic Edition, as per the instructions) I have experienced the exact same problem.

If anyone cares concerning my specs, I'm running on a Vista x64 (using the 64-bit version[s] of Eclipse). Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time!|||I know it Sucks some people say its Firefox I'm running Windows 7 64 bit it crashes if I try to open main.xml Lucky google made app inventor and it will be out soon BUT I WANT TO LEARN JAVA

4) 'Fastboot reboot-bootloader'

5) 'Fastboot erase cache'

6) Boot recovery, wipe everything and restore.

Steps 3-5 are done from command prompt on your PC. So you will have to cd/ls yourself to the tools directory in Android SDK wherever you installed it.

i am trying to do the above to my phone .. ok the whole of the android sdk is is on c:\ ... and the image i am trying to put on is within that folder in the tools folder which is where its supposed to be.. so its like this c:\android\android-sdk-windows\tools . i really am stuck right now i have done things like cd enter everything could someone who knows about this possibly help me out .. thanks in advance|||It's simply cd \android\android-sdk-windows\tools

cd\ takes you to the root dir ie: C:\

cd.. would take you to the next level up, ie: c:\android\android-sdk-windows.

You can get help at the command prompt by typing help CommandName, or, CommandName /?|||Ok I am guessing that is a set of instructions from the Fastboot tool?

If so then you need to be command prompt and in the directory where the Fatboot tool is located.

Then simply type the commands as it says:

1) fastboot flash hboot bravo_alphaspl-oxygen (Press ENTER when done)

2) Fastboot reboot-bootloader (Press ENTER when done)

3) Fastboot erase cache (Press ENTER when done)

I'm trying to download the android sdk but it wouldn't let me because it said that the version of java I have is not strong enough, so I tried to download the new version of java (developers know what I'm talking about) and it wouldn't let me do it.

when I tried to install it it said error could not unzip

can anyone help ?|||Not sure, but often I have seen when the user opts to use the Download Manager from the java site they have problems. I have no problems downloading the NetBeans / JDK bundle. I don't unzip, the installer does that. I'm talking Linux. I download, change the permissions of the download file to 'runnable' (right-click, properties). Then

% sh jdk-6u24-nb-6_9_1-linux-ml.sh

Depending if you are Windows, that might be

C:\\ jdk-6u24-nb-6_9_1.exe

I'm not sure, but the installer does the unzipping. If prompted, install to:

C:\jdk-1.6_u24

after that works, you have to set the JAVA_HOME (if Windows). If Win7, you must do all this as Administrator from what I understand, then you can log on as user.

The NetBeans 6.8 had the Android plug-in. NetBeans is a great code editor. They are working on the next Android plug-in for NetBeans 7.0, but some have got it to working with 6.8.

You want the JavaSE.

- Have a link right to the blog itself.

- Send a notification when a new entry is added (is this possible?).

- A contact button to e-mail me.

- An option for browsing through pictures in the blog in it's own icon in the app.

Developing android Apps in Lua?

Hello, i'm a programmer in Lua specifically game programming. I just recently in the last few months begun to work in app development for the Android 2.2 OS. I started off using the Corona SDK, and did not even look at the pricing. It was the only one i could find written in Lua. The problem is when i went to build my first App it gave me the Debug certificate, which we all know isn't accepted by the android marketplace...so i was wondering if there was any other FREE or at least cheaper SDK out there...or if there was any way to work around this problem with Corona??

Thanks for your help!|||If you're a genuine programmer, especially a game programmer, you should probably appreciate the fact that to build apps for Android with Corona costs less than $200 - that's ridiculously cheap for what you are getting.

There aren't any comparable cheaper SDKs out there - not if you want all the functionality Corona gives you.

Why not see it as a sound investment rather than look for a way to cheat them out of money when they're already being more than reasonable with the price?

.... And no, there's no "workaround" for this "problem" with Corona. It's not a problem, it's a feature. To keep people who prefer to pirate their software out of what is a very respectable developer community.

I am a newbee to Android Application Development and started working on it just about a week ago. I created a very basic, very simple App which would list down some Template Messages on a screen and would allow you to add more as well.

on tapping on any of the messages the user would get another screen displaying the contacts of the phone and on tapping on the contacts the template message selected Earlier would be sent to the selected Contact no.

I have used Native Content Provider for the same.

Now this app runs perfectly fine on the Emulators and i am able to send SMS from one Emulator to another.

When i ported it on a Samsung Galaxy mobile phone, it opened fine and would let me Add more template messages. When i would tap on any of the messages it won't load the list of the contacts and would crash(Unexpected Closure).

Please help me with what could be a possible reason for this. The Phone has Android 2.2 and my App's min SDK is also set to 8.

Android Programming - Getting started?

Hello I am a first year engg. student and interested in programming. I only know C, C++ and haven't done Java. I want to know what the best way to learn android programming is? Is knowing Java a requirement? What is the best SDK out there and also good programmer forums and tutorial websites. I'm a beginner, and would like to do this as a hobby or even part time job. Thank you.|||To program on the Android Platform, you need to know Java. If you know C and C++ then Java is not that hard to pick up. There is only one SDK and that is from Google, but it is free and easy to setup. There are a number of tutorials on youtube, that will guide you from installing to actually developing.|||Since you are a beginner learn java properly.... and its not that difficult to study android:)

android will be very easy if you are expert in java:)

Writing an Android Program?

I am looking to write a simple android program for myself that will save data and organize it. I was wondering how i would go about this? I got the SDK, I have som basic Java programming knowledge, and i have Java SE development kit. I have never written a program with a GUI though, and i have no idea how to make links and such. anyone wanna help me out here?|||Well for starters you are going to want to check out the Eclipse IDE with the Android plug in because this will let you create an Android VM to test and debug your code without having to repeatedly flash a real Android every time.

Can someone help me with updating my samsung vibrant to android 2.2?

the steps given by http://developer.android.com/index.html confuse me... Can you give me step by step directions? I have a Windows laptop. I get lost in the "sdk" and "avp", and dont know how to download, or start the sdk set up.. i do know how to work and use computers but the directions confuse me...thank you for any help. :D|||There's good news and bad news.

The bad news is Android 2.2 is not yet available for the Vibrant. It will definitely get Android 2.2, but not until later this year. What you see on that website is a toolkit for developers to create apps and custom ROMs. SDK is Software Development Kit. Without getting technical, what you see is for developers to create. It's not something that can be installed on your phone.

The good news is that once Android 2.2 becomes available for your phone, it will be done OTA(Over The Air). It will just pop up on your phone that an update is available. You click that you want to install it and it's all done for you.

I'm sure this isn't what you wanted to hear, but nonetheless, I hope it was helpful for you.

Android Developing - Emulator not responding?

I've been following this tutorial for the most part

http://mobiforge.com/developing/story/ge鈥?/a>

and constantly when i go to test the application the emulator just sits there not responding (windows vista)

I'm pretty sure i did everything correctly, installing the ADT and the SDK...wondering if i should just plug in my android and test them on there?

Any advice is appreciated.

- Sophomore Computer science major|||If the emulator is not working, It usually means you are having a problem with ADT. This meaning that if you attempt to debug on device it will error out as well because of a mis-communication with ADT. I suggest un-installing everything and reinstalling it all from scratch making sure that you install the proper drivers that are recommendedas well.

Can I turn a used Android phone into an Android "developer" phone?

I would like an android phone for developing apps. Right now, I'm limited to using the android emulator that comes with the SDK, and it's very slow and buggy. The problem is, I can't afford the $400 for an actual developer phone. There are lots of used android phones on craigslist for cheap (under $100 dollars), and I was wondering if it's possible to use one of those without requiring a carrier.

I don't need the ability to call or use wireless or anything like that. I just want to be able to put my apps on the phone and run them. I hear terms tossed around all the time about "jailbreaking" and "unlocking" and "root access" and whatnot, but I'm kinda lost here. Can I buy a cheap used android phone and use it as a "developer" phone?|||How are you going to develop if you don't know what simple phone terms are. You will have to have root access to use the more advanced apps. It isn't hard. I can root most phones in under 5 min. If you can find a htc phone check out unrevoked. Other phones use various other methods.

What programming language is used by Linux?

I was looking through the documentation for the two new SDK's android and Iphone. They seem to both be based in some form of C. My friend said they were both based off of the Linux software. Is this true? If it is it seems like C is going to be the dominant language of the future, no?|||It seems to me that I was looking at C and some of its variants under windoze. C is common to both windoze and Linux. Other languages are as well.

The programming language/s used UNDER Linux depends on the skills of the individual programmer.

What programming language is used by Linux?

I was looking through the documentation for the two new SDK's android and Iphone. They seem to both be based in some form of C. My friend said they were both based off of the Linux software. Is this true? If it is it seems like C is going to be the dominant language of the future, no?|||different languages have different benefits and short comings, so which programming language to use is usually based on a case by case basis. C is good because it allows the programmer to allot memory location and sizes, allowing very precise programming. most OS will be written in C or another language of a similar level. From my knowledge, most Linux programs are written in python because it is extremely powerful and easy to use.

There can be no single dominant language. For example Java is good because it is lightweight and fast, so it can be used effectively on cell phones and cars, but could not be used to make a solid operating system.|||First off, Linux is built on a mix of languages. While it is true that Linux is built aminly off of C, there musst be other languages involved to run it. Starting off, there is C++ incorporated into Linux. There are multiple sites where you can download the Linux sourcecode. Next, you MUST put assembly language into the ensemble. This is the only way to execute your software, because your computer does not read your source code and execute it. Now, about C being the language of the future, no, it is more of a mid-level language. C++ would be more of a language of the future, but they are both good to know. Also, since Linux is open source, there are many different types out there, including Red Hat and Ubuntu. So there is really no single language.

I would strongly recommend you learn a proper programming language such as C/C++ or Java first.. Once you have the fundamentals of one of these languages then you will be in a much better position to develop applications for Android.

Android games developments ?

hey guys

I'm thinking of developing games for Android devices

I installed the Google SDK

but it uses Java

I never tried java before, is it good for developing games ?

are all Android games made with the Google SDK with Java ?

for example "Angry Birds"

did they really use the Google SDK to make it ?

thanks.|||About a month ago I decided to do the same thing. I purchased Java for Dummies 6th edition and Android for Dummies off of Amazon.com (about $23 a piece). I read through the first section of Java then played around with it a bit. I have a fairly strong background in C++ and QBasic, and I have worked with Python as well, so learning wasn't too difficult, but not necessarily easy. The books are great. They make it as easy as possible to understand. Coupled with the internet and Yahoo Answers it is not too bad.

I looked at what it requires to program on the Android and realized I was at a loss as to what they were doing. So I decided to look at Java Swing (a section in the Java book). It is Java's graphics user interface and can be used to write any type of program including games. It runs in the Java Runtime Enviornment so it is a real program. Furthermore, with Android being a GUI as well, it should help concept wise. I am about half way done with programming the Swing GUI, then I will move on to Android.

All Android programs use the SDK to do it.

If you are starting out programming, I'd suggest taking a class (if possible. Right now I am actually sitting in my Semester 4 C++ programming class). Otherwise, you will need to do a lot of playing around and reading to figure out what to do.

As for Java and Swing, I can probably answer questions you have, seeing as they most likely posed a problem to me as well. If you'd like to contact me further, email me at rphello101@cox.net and/or through Yahoo Answers.

By the way, download Java Oracle as well. It will allow you to write Java programs easily and allows you to use the SDK|||Yes, since android uses Java you have to make games in Java - just like you make other games for mobiles.

Java might not be good for game development for PC but Java games are very popular for mobiles. And if you code smartly, you can make games like Angry Birds and even better than that.

Which is needed to develop apps for android?

Hi,

I want to start developing apps for Android O.S. I'm a little confused, do I need Java programming or C++? Because on Android's SDK page the steps show that I need Java programming.. Thanks in advance,

Sarah|||You need the Android SDK %26amp; Java. All Android apps run on the Dalvik VM. Can you remove stock apps that come on your Android phone WITHOUT ROOT!?

I want to remove some useless apps such as Amazon MP3, Appack, etc. Is there a way to do this without rooting my phone? I know I heard someone say I can do this using the SDK, but I don't remember where I heard this.|||My understanding is that if your manufacturer or provider has deemed these to be system apps, you can only modify them with root. No app can resolve this, because without root, your phone will not give permission to the apps to remove them (or allow you to give permission to them).

It's similar to administrator privileges on a computer. If you aren't an administrative user, you can't change system settings. And the sad truth is that you are not the administrator of your phone (unless said rooting occurs).

I need a step by step Directions
